lyrics

The Guns of August

The sun rose over the hill, Bare for the gathered hay,
A blackbird sang by the windowsill, And a girl kneels down to pray:

‘Keep him safe through the night, O Lord,
Whom Thou hast kept safe through the day.’

The sun rose over the shell-swept hill, The guns are over the way,
A soldier turns from the hell of the night. To the hell of another day,

And a bullet sings by the parapet to drive in the new-turned clay.
A shell screams over his head to ring in another day

The sun sinks over the hill, They had carried in all the hay,
A blackbird sang by the window-sill, And a girl kneels down to pray:

‘Keep him safe through the night, O Lord,
Whom Thou hast kept safe through the day.’

The sun sinks by the shell-swept hill, The guns had cleared the way,
A soldier turned to sleep that night. Who would not wake for the day,

A bullet sang by the parapet
Shredding flesh like new turned clay
A blackbird flew from the window-sill,
While a girl knelt down to pray.
