Anthem for Doomed Youth

from Millions of the Mouthless Dead by Vallhünd

/

about

Wilfred Owen poetry is often used to study this time period and this song shares the name and many of the lyrics of one his pieces. This was always envisioned to be the album closer. I left the middle part empty on purpose for battle sound FX and the extra chorus for the "whoas."

lyrics

No words for those who died as cattle
Only the anger of the guns.
They lie in silence despite the rifles' rattle
Spitting out their deadly orisons.

What candles may be held to speed them all?
To guide them home when they die.
The pallor of girls' brows shall be their pall;
Their eyes shine the glimmers of goodbye

Chorus
No salvation for them, no prayers or bells;
Nor any voice of mourning save the choirs,
Of shrill, demented, wailing shells
The bugles call from sad shires.

This is the price of the common man
Who lived in a common way
Called upon to serve by “better men.”
Who can tally the worth of all the slain?
